Twenty-nine-year-old Rayann Germaine, betrayed by her lover, flees in grief and rage. She meets book store owner Louisa Thatcher, a woman many years her senior, who offers shelter and work... and soon, passion, and a loving place in her life.
But Rayann encounters challenges to this new love—from friends who question its wisdom, from her mother who disapproves of this liaison with a woman her own contemporary, from Louisa's son who learns for the first time his mother's true sexuality.
And there are profound differences between Rayann and Louisa themselves, two women who come from dramatically different places in the spectrum of age and life experience. Their only common ground seems to be the searing attraction that they both try to deny...

Touchwood edition by Karin Kallmaker Literature Fiction eBooks
This was the first or second lesbian romance I read and I love it as much today as I did when I first read it over 15 years ago. This story is of a May-December romance between Rayann and Louisa. Rayann is a graphic artist who has recently been betrayed by her girlfriend and Louisa is the owner of a bookstore who guards her heart so closely it is difficult for her to let anyone get close. When Rayann flees her home after discovering her girlfriend's betrayal it is Louisa who provides her with a job and a roof over her head.
These two women fall in love despite the differences in their ages and experiences. Lou has been closeted her entire life and is afraid of loosing the love of her son and grandson should they discover she is a lesbian and Rayann finds it difficult to convince Lou that the differences in their ages and life experience are not the insurmountable difficulties that Lou perceives them to be.
This book gives a wonderful insight into the preconceptions that lesbians faced in the 60's from the world in general and the lesbian community itself.
It is a great story well worth reading.

Touchwood edition by Karin Kallmaker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
As with all of Karin's books a true delight
I have enjoyed many of Kallmaker's books, and will continue to do so; but this one didn't do it for me. I liked how Kallmaker handled the age difference, and enjoyed many scenes. As stated, I will continue to read her books, and will always recommend a read by this author.
Readable copy and arrived on time.
Loved how this story evolved. Loved the 2 characters individually and especially who they became together. Their relationship with each other changes their outlook on life in general. They are good together, despite the age difference.
I have written over 500 reviews, with my name and without. I've read thousands of lesbian novels by now, some wonderful, many OK and some terrible. Whenever I'm asked about outstanding books though, I always come back to this one and it's companion Watermark. The first one is a May/December romance, told with humor and great understanding. The second is about wrenching loss and second love. Together they tell a wonderful tale of the power of relationships. Both should be read.
Beautiful, extremely moving and just plain wonderful, Touchwood is the kind of love story that is both deep and mature and makes you wish you could find someone like Louisa in real life. It can be a bit frustrating at times when Louisa and Rayann fail to effectively communicate with each other, especially in the beginning, but it's also 100% believable. As a complete softie for May/December romances, I love the dynamics between the two main characters and how much each woman cares for the other.
My fiancee and soon to be wife recommended this book. She's onboard the USS Iwo Jima that's currently in the Atlantic prepping for deployment. I'm alot older and she's alot wiser. In some ways, in many ways actually, this storyline mirrors our own. It's sweet and hesitant, not pushy and obtuse. Hitting home at times in a good way, it reminds me of my own feelings and moments of hesitation. It's a romance that says that there may be roadblocks but nothing is insurmountable. It takes a leap of faith sometimes to overcome your fears. But that leap can land you in some very nice places.
